Jasper National Park is a Dark Sky Preserve of over 11,000 km², which makes it one of the largest protected night skies anywhere and unusually easy to reach for its quality. At 53° north the aurora appears during moderate geomagnetic activity, several times a month in active seasons.
Astronomical darkness disappears for a few weeks around the solstice, and returns fully by early August in time for the Perseids. Autumn and winter give long nights, cold clear air after front passages, and mountain reflections in Maligne and Pyramid Lakes.
