Death Valley is an International Dark Sky Park with Bortle 2 skies across most of its area and one of the lowest cloud frequencies of any accessible site in North America. On a moonless night the zodiacal light is obvious, the Milky Way casts shadows, and airglow is often visible to the naked eye.
The constraint is the season, not the sky. Summer overnight temperatures routinely stay above 35 °C, which makes the classic observing months October to April. Winter nights are long, cold and superb; the park's Harmony Borax Works, Mesquite Flat dunes and Badwater Basin are the standard shooting locations.
