Tromsø is 350 km inside the Arctic Circle and its sky calendar is brutal in both directions. From roughly 18 May to 25 July the Sun never sets — no stars, no aurora, no astronomy. From late November to mid-January the Sun never rises, and the aurora oval sits more or less overhead through a polar night that gives twenty hours of usable darkness a day.
