SnapCosmos is built around a simple principle:

Whenever possible, calculations are performed locally in your browser, and your preferences remain on your own device.

3. Information We Process

SnapCosmos processes only the information required to provide its features.

Location

If you choose to share your location through your browser, your approximate geographic coordinates are used to calculate personalised astronomy and weather information, including:

  • Moon position
  • Planet visibility
  • Milky Way visibility
  • ISS passes
  • Aurora forecasts
  • Weather conditions
  • Sunrise and sunset times
  • Stargazing recommendations

You may also search for any location manually instead of sharing your device location.

Your selected location, including its name and geographic coordinates, may be stored locally on your device so your preferences can be remembered between visits.

SnapCosmos does not store your location on its own servers.

Preferences

To improve your experience, SnapCosmos may store preferences locally on your device, including:

  • selected location
  • preferred units
  • time format
  • display preferences

These preferences remain on your device and are never linked to a user account.

4. Local Storage

SnapCosmos uses your browser's Local Storage to remember your preferences between visits.

This may include:

  • your selected location
  • latitude and longitude
  • preferred units
  • display settings

This information is stored only on your own device.

You may remove it at any time through your browser settings.

5. Analytics

With your consent, SnapCosmos uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the website and to improve its content, usability and performance.

Google Analytics may process technical information such as:

  • pages visited
  • browser and device type
  • operating system
  • approximate geographic region
  • language
  • referring pages
  • session duration
  • interactions with the website

SnapCosmos does not use Google Analytics for advertising, remarketing or personalised advertising.

6. Error Reporting

To help identify and resolve unexpected technical problems, SnapCosmos uses Lovable's built-in error reporting.

If an application error occurs, limited technical information may be processed, including browser information, operating system, page URL and technical error details.

This information is used solely to diagnose issues, improve reliability and maintain the website.

It is never used for advertising or profiling.

7. Third-Party Services

To provide live astronomy and weather information, SnapCosmos communicates directly with trusted third-party services.

These currently include:

  • Open-Meteo (weather forecasts and geocoding)
  • NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (aurora forecasts and geomagnetic activity)
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim (reverse geocoding)
  • api.g7vrd.co.uk (ISS pass predictions)
  • Google Fonts

When your browser communicates with these services, they may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser request headers and the requested location needed to fulfil your request.

Each provider processes information according to its own Privacy Policy.

8. Astronomy Calculations

Astronomical calculations are performed locally in your browser using the open-source Astronomy Engine library.

Your location and personal information are not transmitted to Astronomy Engine.

9. Hosting

SnapCosmos is hosted using Lovable's hosting infrastructure.

Like virtually every website, the hosting provider temporarily processes standard technical server logs, such as IP addresses, requested pages and timestamps, to deliver the website securely, maintain reliability and protect against abuse.

SnapCosmos does not use these logs for advertising, profiling or marketing.

10. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

Where the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies, SnapCosmos processes information on the following legal bases:

  • Consent, when you choose to share your location through your browser or consent to analytics.
  • Legitimate Interests, to operate, secure, maintain and improve the website, provide the services you request and diagnose technical issues.

11. International Data Transfers

Some third-party service providers used by SnapCosmos may process information outside your country of residence.

Where applicable, those providers are responsible for implementing appropriate safeguards for international data transfers in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

12. Data Retention

SnapCosmos does not maintain user accounts and does not store your selected location on its own servers.

Preferences stored locally remain on your device until you remove them.

Information processed by third-party providers is retained according to their own retention policies.

13. Your Rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, including the GDPR, UK GDPR and CCPA, you may have the right to:

  • access your personal information
  • request correction of inaccurate information
  • request deletion of personal information
  • restrict or object to certain processing
  • withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent
  • lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

Because SnapCosmos stores most preferences locally on your own device rather than on its own servers, many privacy controls can be exercised by clearing your browser's Local Storage.

14. Children's Privacy

SnapCosmos is intended for a general audience.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

If you believe that a child has provided personal information, please contact us and we will investigate the matter.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to SnapCosmos, applicable laws or the services we use.

The latest version will always be available on this page.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this document indicates when this Privacy Policy was most recently revised.
