The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve covers 4,300 km² of the Mackenzie Basin, including Lake Tekapo and Mount John Observatory. At 44° south the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds never set, and the southern Milky Way from Crux to Sagittarius is the finest stretch of sky on Earth.
The basin's inland climate is much drier than New Zealand's coasts, with the clearest run typically in autumn and winter. Winter nights are long and cold, and the galactic core rises before dawn — the classic Tekapo shot of the core over the Church of the Good Shepherd is a June and July composition.
